The story

Manu Contrera was born in Montevideo, the home of candombe, and now lives in Barcelona. His music is a Río de la Plata explosion: the harmonic complexity of jazz crossed with the groove and drums of Afro-Uruguayan candombe, layered with gospel, funk, hip-hop and rock.

Leading the Manu Contrera Quartet he tours venues in Barcelona and projects across northern Europe. As a producer and beatmaker he takes that language into the studio; as a teacher, he passes it on. One thread throughout: candombe-jazz.

“The harmony of jazz, the heart of candombe.”
